Illes Balears Film Commission

The Minorca Film Commission, run by the Destí Menorca Foundation, was created in mid-2006 by the Minorca Island Council to encourage audiovisual productions on the island by foreign, Spanish and local production companies.

In late 2006, the Minorca Film Commission joined the Spain Film Commission, with the following aims:

  • To promote the island's image
  • To promote the image of the island's audiovisual sector, as well as that of other companies involved in the production process
  • To encourage its development and growth.

The activities undertaken are:

  • Promotion of the island as a place to film, presence at trade fairs, presentations and film festivals
  • Assistance with finding locations
  • Help in obtaining film permits from the island's authorities
  • Liasing between foreign producers and their local production associates
  • Providing information on accommodation and service companies
  • Monitoring the filming undertaken on the island
  • Encouraging local industry and seeking commercial outlets for the audiovisual productions made by our member companies and helping them in the international marketplace
  • Collaboration with other organisations to encourage local industry.

The Minorca Film Commission has the support of a network of companies that offer all the services a production company requires, as well as a large network of tourist accommodation and support services that make the job of production easier.
Tourist destinations that already work like this, confirm the influence cinema has on people when choosing and planning their holidays. In the UK, it is estimated that 80% of visitors travel to places they have seen in films and that one in five travels specifically to see their favourite film's locations. In the French capital, 60% of travellers come because of the image of the city conveyed by cinema and television.
It is worth pointing out that two productions have been filmed on Minorca: 'Island Wind' of 1988, directed by Gerardo Gormezano, which was entirely filmed on the island, and Andrew Grieve's 'Hornblower: Mutiny', from 2000-1.
The richness of the countryside and the weather make Minorca an exceptional place to shoot films. The large amount of archaeological remains and historic monuments, as well as the privileged natural environment, recognised by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve, offer audiovisual producers many different options.
With this initiative, Minorca is joining the Balearic Islands Film Commission, offering cinema, TV and advertising professionals a wide range of options to bring their projects to fruition in the Balearic Islands.
